The Bird Street Gallery is exhibiting the work of award-winning artist, and academic, Nomusa Makhubu. The exhibition provides a comprehensive survey of Makhubu's key themes over the course of  fourteen years.

Her practice is lens based, and through the medium of photography she explores issues of identity and particularly the sensitive issue of representation/self-representation.

The exhibition includes the following series:

Old Gaol (2004/2017)
Fragments (2005)
Trading Lies (2006/2010)
Self Portrait Project (2007/2013)
Inquietude (2009)
Dream Sweeper (2010)
The Flood (2013)
In Living Colour (2015)

"My photographs are an exploration of my own identity. Having grown up in townships in the Northern part of the country, I lost touch with my cultural traditions. And every attempt to understand this background, turned seemingly fabricated". – Nomusa Makhubu,

The artist, represented by Erdmann Contemporary, will be present at the official opening of the exhibition, with the Nelson Mandela University Visual Arts Department’s Professor Vulindlela Nyoni, making the opening address.
